We are super focussed on our 2024 explicit improvement agenda: A whole school and community approach; striving for excellence and equity in curriculum and engagement ensuring high expectations for all.
Our staff have been working on engaging our students by designing their lessons to include super engaging teaching strategies. As a result, our students are having an opportunity to be active learners, sharing their learning with each other.
Here are a couple of examples of the engaging teaching strategies in Science – Year 1 are engrossed in being scientists and producing detailed scientific labelled drawings. Year 2/3 are making their learning visible and working together to classify plants and animals.
We are excited about our learning!

Random acts of kindness week!
This week we have been working on our value of being KIND, using the Random Acts of Kindness week as a stimulus for how we can be kind to our community. It was lovely to start the week with a Be Kind award from each class and the teachers have been working with their students on some great examples of how they can show kindness in their world.
Maybe you could have a chat to your child/ren about how they have spread some kindness this week?
A Dayboro Learner
We are continuing to teach our students the qualities of a Dayboro Learner. In the first few weeks, we worked on be a great communicator like Coco the Cockatoo. This fortnight we are explicitly teaching our students about collaboration and the skills to use to collaborate as a learner. At assembly, we discussed real life examples of this:
We know, as adults, what an important skill collaboration is in our lives, both in the work place and at home. We look forward to developing this quality in our students.

Dear Families and Friends
Being on time and ready to learn.
At the start of every year and throughout the year, students are learning how important it is to be on time and ready to learn. Students are reminded that being organised is the key to getting the most out of their learning so time is not wasted and tasks can be completed properly.
One way to do this is for children to make sure their desks are tidy and their equipment is ready to use for the day.
Arriving at school on time also ensures a good start to the day and gives the children time to get their belongings organised and ready.
Being on time and organised is a life-long skill which we should all try to instil in every student. It is something that they can transfer to extra-curricular activities and everyday life.
If you discuss this with your children and try to make being organised and on time a priority in your life, it can help the whole family too.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS
Instrumental Lessons and Band have started!! Band practice is every Tuesday morning at 7:50am in the hall. Lessons with Mr Yates will be every Tuesday. Ms Dianne Munns visits every Wednesday from 12-3 and conducts lessons for the Beginner students.
Now that the days are starting to get warmer please remember that it is an expectation that all children wear hats during play times and PE lessons. The rule is “No Hat, no Play!”
Children that do not wear hats are expected to be in the CSA areas during break times.

I have spoken a lot about the importance of reading and how supporting, valuing and sharing reading with your children at home is the best way you can help them with their learning.

Setting Homework Routines
The beginning of each year is a fantastic time to re-establish some routines for homework and home revision. Having a clear homework expectation and a set place and time to complete homework is the most effective way for children to develop long lasting habits. I encourage you to sit with your child/children and work out the best time and setting for them to complete their homework and also what you expect they get done in that time.
Perhaps in the morning when eating breakfast at the bench might be the best time.
Maybe as soon as your child comes home from school, they complete their homework at the table before they play.
At Dayboro SS, we ensure homework that is set is directly related to the learning that is taking place in the classroom for that week. This means that the work students are bringing home is meaningful and helping to consolidate current teaching and learning. It is possible that students may feel they are unsure about the work without the support of their teacher at home. We ask that you have a go at helping and then write a quick note on the homework, saying your child found it difficult and could the teacher please explain it to them again to have another go the next night. It’s really important this does not become a stressful event and that your child can see that even if they are having difficulty, you can simply reach out to the teacher for help. I often hear parents say that we teach things so differently now and how they help their child does not actually ‘help’. The way we teach some concepts has changed over time, but mostly you will find that when we think back to our school years and how we were taught, we don’t tend to remember what was taught in primary school but more how and what we were taught in early high school. The important thing to remember is to keep homework and the environment around it as positive as possible. No teacher or parents or students want tears and trauma over homework.
It is also important that students in year 6 start to think about their study habits and what ‘revision’ may look like at home so they can learn to ‘go over’ the things they have learnt that day in order to prepare for high school. I encourage year 6 students to spend approximately 5 minutes per subject each night, revising what they learnt that day, taking notes in their own words and reading over these. So, in a day, students may be taught English, Maths, Science and HASS which would be twenty minutes of revision for that day.
Any questions, please feel free to e-mail me: dmath9@eq.edu.au

The Tuckerbox
Despite our best efforts to enhance our tuckshop, volunteer numbers remain a challenge, especially on Fridays.
This Friday, 23rd February currently has no volunteers. If by Thursday morning we have no volunteers who can commit to this day, the executive committee will decide to close the tuckshop for Friday of this week.
For our newer families, the P&C has worked hard to improve The Tuckerbox over the last year, introducing a new online orderering system, revising the menu for better , healthier options, and upgrading appliances. Despite these changes, recruiting volunteers remains a challenge.
In understanding your time constraints, we've created a survey to gather your thoughts and ideas. Your input is crucial in shaping the future of The Tuckerbox.

Library News and Events
Last week we celebrated Queensland School Library Week. Students who visited the library during breaks last week were able to participate in activities celebrating libraries and a love of books and reading.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our display or borrowed a book with a love of reading theme.
Borrowing
Students are reminded that they are able to return and borrow books at both breaks every day as well as during their weekly class time. Please remember to bring library bags – students who don’t have a library bag are welcome to come along to the maker space to make their own library bag.
Dayboro State School has subscribed to Education Queensland’s digital library for students in years 4, 5, and 6 for 2024. This subscription allows students to access eBooks, magazines, audio books, graphic novels, etc in a digital format. To access these digital materials, students need to open the Sora app which is available by installing it on a digital devices or via the Sora webpage if using a computer. Upon opening the app students need to nominate their school, which needs to be entered as Education Queensland. Students will need their MIS Id number to open their account. Classes in years 4, 5, and 6 have explored the app during library sessions over the last two weeks.
If students have a Moreton Bay Region Library membership this membership can also be linked through Sora which increases the number of reading materials available.
Book Fair
Book Fair is on the way!
Due to commitments across the school in throughout term two in the lead up to our school’s 150th anniversary celebrations, we have made the decision to host book fair in term 1. This year’s theme is “Book Fair Garden”.
To help us prepare our Library space for Book Fair we are hosting a “Design a Mini Beast” Competition. To enter, students need to design and construct an insect or mini beast to add to our Book Fair display. We are looking for bright and colourful creations that make use of recycled materials. There is one prize per year level. Closing date for entries is March 7th at the library. We have already received some amazing entries from students for this competition. Please remember to include the student’s name and class on each entry.
Book Fair will open on Friday the 8th of March and run until Wednesday the 13th of March. Students may visit with a parent or caregiver before school on each of these days from 8.15am or after school until 4.00pm. Students will bring home further information next week regarding Book Fair. Families wishing to purchase items from Book Fair may do so using cash or card payment facilities at the Book Fair or via online payments.
Maker Space
The library continues to be a busy space during the breaks. It is fabulous to see so many students creating and collaborating with others as they design and build interesting inventions in addition to playing games and assisting other students.
Have a great week!
Mrs Wilkinson
