Dear Families and Friends
Welcome back everyone to Term 3!
Breaking news! Our new Principal has been announced. We welcome back Mrs Gabrielle Douglas as our Acting Principal for 2022. We look forward to Mrs Douglas commencing on Monday 18th July. An email has been sent to all families notifying them of Mrs Douglas' appointment.
This term we welcome back Mrs Pretorius to 3P and Mrs Vaughan working every Friday on 1D. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Mrs Baker for all her hard work on 3P since the start of the year. She will remain with us for another four weeks and will be working on various classes over this time.
Big events this term include Dance Fever lessons. These lessons are part of our school curriculum and will be happening every Thursday for every class. Our first lessons start this Thursday, so payments need to be finalised before then. Please make this a priority this week.
Year 5 Camp is also happening in the last week of the term. Also start getting organised for our Book Week Dress up day on Wednesday 24th August. The theme this year is “Dreaming with Eyes Open.”
The Yr 5 and 6 students will participate in 3 Interschool Sports days this term on the 29th July, 12th August and 26th August- all Fridays this term. Notes have gone home. Our Junior Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday 19th August this term.
Finally, our Prep Information session will be held on Wednesday 17th August at 9:30am in the hall so spread the word to any prospective Prep for 2023 parents.
We have 2 important dates to take note of this term: Monday 8th August will be our Show Holiday and Friday 2nd September is our gazetted Student Free day.
Parents will also have the opportunity this term to discuss their child’s learning progress in parent teacher interviews. There will be more detailed information provided later in the term.
Also remember to please name personal belongings like jumpers, hats and drink bottles. We have moved any Lost Property items to the office now. All named belongings will be kept at the office for safe return. Eventually unnamed items are disposed of thoughtfully. Unfortunately, the Lost Property box was overflowing with lunchboxes, jumpers and food scraps and rodents and possums were making it their home.
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 11 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.

Welcome Back
We trust that everyone had an opportunity to relax and squeeze in some reading over the winter break – cold and wet days are an awesome time to curl up with a great book. Term 3 is another busy term in the Library with our annual celebration of children’s literature in August.
Book Week
Our annual Book Week celebrations are scheduled for 20th - 26th of August. Students have already been working hard to help us prepare art works to display in the Library to promote this year’s theme, “Dreaming with Eyes Open”.
We have planned some exciting activities to help us celebrate Book Week. Our Character Costume Parade will be held on Wednesday the 24th of August from 9.00 a.m. on the oval. We cannot wait to see all of the awesome costumes! Students are welcome to come and work in the maker space on Fridays at first break to create costume elements in preparation for the costume parade in August.
We also have Meerkat Productions returning to perform a live-action retelling of two of the books that have been nominated to win prizes during Book Week. This year’s books are “Stellarphant” for lower school students and “The Detective’s Guide to Ocean Travel” for upper school students. We hope everyone is able to join us for these events.
During Book Week each year the Children’s Book Council of Australia award prizes to Australian authors in 6 different categories. This year’s shortlisted books for the Early Childhood Book of the Year and Picture Book of the Year categories are shown below.
Our picks from these two categories are “Winston and The Indoor Cat” which tells the story of two very different characters who step out of their comfort zones and become friends; and “Stellarphant” a story about the resilience and perseverance of Stella the elephant who is determined to become an astronaut.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2022 is still running. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books. Reading record sheets are available from class teachers and from the Library.
Have a great week!
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.
Welcome back to term 3. Our children are settling back into routine quickly and we as educators have enjoyed catching up with them and hearing about their school holiday fun.
A reminder to confirm your bookings are correct via the iparent portal. We also have some lost property still in the black bucket outside the service, so please encourage your child/ren to check this regularly (there are drink bottles, jumpers and hats with no names).
If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iparent portal. This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Alternatively, please send the service a text message on the mobile number below. Failure to notify us of absences in after school care means educators are having to search for children and a no-show fee may be applied to your account. A reminder that bookings with less than 24hrs will need to be made via contacting the service on 0459 991 697.
Need a helping hand before or after school? Enrolling your child/ren is easy and there are no enrolment fees. Visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au , click 'How to enrol’ on the right-hand side of the page, and follow the steps. When this is submitted, we will be in touch as soon as possible to support the finalisation of your enrolment and initial bookings. If you have any issues, please contact Katie at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts team on 1300 612 462.
My name is Peta-Maree and I am co-coordinator of Homestead Country Music Club’s Youth Talent Expo. Below is the flyer and the entry form for our expo to share with your students and their families. This expo is a great opportunity for kids to showcase their talent (singing and instrumental) and win some amazing prizes as well as meet likeminded kids and make new friends. We hope this is of interest to some of your students and they join us on August 6th at the Youth Talent Expo.
