Welcome back!
Welcome back to all of our Dayboro community for 2021. It has been wonderful meeting the students today in classrooms and during play, seeing so many smiling faces ready to learn! A very special welcome also to all of our new preppies and their families, as well as to all other new students across the school.
Thank you to all of the community and staff for being so welcoming. I am very excited to be joining Dayboro as Principal, while Garry Drummond is working for the department in his new role. Our staff have been working extremely hard over the last week to ensure that the learning environment is prepared and our teaching and learning is planned to meet the needs of our students, providing quality and engaging learning.

Transitioning to a new year level can be an exciting but sometimes daunting experience. As your child settles in, there may be some adjustments required. The teachers at Dayboro SS are working hard to ensure that you are fully informed about the organisational structures within their classrooms. In week 3 we will hold our Parent Information Sessions to share more about these structures and to further foster that partnership with you. Dates and times for these sessions will be distributed via email. Talking to your child about their learning and their new class will assist them to transition. Please do not hesitate to ask if you are unsure, we would be happy to help you!

We look forward to a busy and productive Term 1 with a number of special events including:
- Parent Information Sessions week 3
- School Leader Induction Assembly week 4
- Start Smart Banking Visit week 4
- Swimming for our Year 3 and 4 students weeks 5-9
- National Day against Bullying week 8
- Parent Teacher Interviews week 9 and 10
- Easter Hat Parade week 10
Of course, our focus remains on inspiring students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment. I look forward to being a partner with you in your child’s learning journey!
Online Services Consent Form
We have revised our Dayboro SS Online Service Consent Form and Information Sheet to reflect the online services we are currently using with our students here at Dayboro State School. The letter and consent form (attached) informs you about the third-party online services used in our school and how your child’s information, including personal information and works, may be recorded, used, disclosed, and published to the services. We ask all families to complete an updated form for each of their children to be involved with the learning provided when using these websites. If you require any further information relating to these online services please contact us. Please to complete this form and send it back electronically to admin@dayboross.eq.edu.au. Alternatively, we can provide you with a hard copy. We appreciate your timely responses.

Principal
We would like to extend a warm welcome to all our returning and new families to Dayboro school this year. 2021 is already off to an excellent start with our “Meet and Greet” session held last week. Parents had the opportunity to visit classrooms and students could meet their teachers before the first day. Thank you teachers for providing this opportunity in a week that is already very busy with staff meetings, professional learnings and preparing classrooms. We hope it helped to relieve some of that first day chaos for parents and students, especially when you have to drop more than one child! The first day of school also went very smoothly and the teachers reported that students were highly positive and eager to learn.
Welcome also to our new Student Leaders for 2021. We wish them all the best for the year ahead and their leadership journey.
Finally, our School Vision is “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.” Our staff and students are committed to this vision and we are looking forward to a great year of learning and growth for all our students!
In 2021 we also continue to embrace our values of
“Be respectful, be responsible, be positive, be tolerant and be proud.”
As we begin a new year of learning and personal growth in 2021. I have included some ways of helping develop a positive Growth Mindset in our children.
Below are 6 tips for promoting a “growth mindset” in children.
- Help children understand that the brain works like a muscle, that can only grow through hard work, determination and lots and lots of practice.
- Don’t tell students they are smart, gifted or talented since this implies they were born with the knowledge, and does not encourage effort and growth.
- Let children know when they demonstrate a growth mindset. “I can always improve so I’ll keep trying.”
- Praise the process. It’s effort, hard work and practice that allow children to achieve their true potential.
- Embrace mistakes and challenges. Children sometimes learn the most when they make mistakes. Let them know they are a big part of the learning process. There is nothing like the feeling of struggling through a very difficult problem, only to finally break through and solve it.
- Encourage participation and collaborative group learning. Children learn best when they are immersed in a topic and allowed to discuss and learn with their peers.

Food awareness
Dayboro SS supports students diagnosed with anaphylaxis or at risk of anaphylaxis and uses a range of strategies to reduce allergens in school.
We have one student in Year 5 and one student in Year 6 with NUT allergy and ask parents to refrain from sending any nut containing products in lunchboxes.
This is not a ban, but a strategy in place to reduce the chance of a student at risk of anaphylaxis coming into contact with their allergen. Other strategies include handwashing before and after meals, eating provided lunches (no sharing) and staff education.
Staff participated in Anaphylaxis on-line and practical training this week hosted by Nikki Smith (EQ School nurse).
