The Teaching of Reading
This year, with the implementation of version 9 of the Australian Curriculum, at Dayboro State School we have been implementing some new procedures in our teaching of reading. As a staff, we engaged in much professional learning in 2024 to prepare for this implementation.
Our Prep-3 classes now participate in whole class word reading explicit instructional routines 4-5 times per week. These instructional routines include explicit teaching of the sound, opportunities to segment words containing that sound and multiple opportunities for the students to interact with the teacher by spelling words and reading words. These explicit routines are then followed by some purposeful reading activities based around the focus sounds. The students use decodable readers to develop their word reading skills and to develop fluency. It is wonderful to see the students gaining so much confidence in their reading.

Our upper school classes are heavily focusing on teaching comprehension through their English units using the aligned texts. The students have been learning explicitly about the vocab in the texts they are reading with teachers using shared and dialogic reading routines to analyse this vocab. Many students have been engaging in rich discussions about inferencing from the texts.

Dee Mathiesen, our Head of Curriculum is regularly posting information about the new reading processes in her ‘Curriculum’ section of the newsletter. She has shared plenty of links for parents to use to support your child in their reading journey!
Renovations at Helping Hands House
We have recently been seeking quotes for repainting the interior of our old house, our Helping Hands (outside school hours care) home base. We are working with QBuild to commence this project as soon as possible. We look forward to a great result, creating a wonderful space for our students before and after school.
In the meantime, Declan and his wonderful Helping Hands crew are working out of the school hall. The students are having a great time in the afternoons using the covered sports area and the playgrounds. Thanks to all our HH parents for your understanding.

Student Success
We love to celebrate our students’ successes outside of school as we know how much hard work and persistence is involved in their extracurricular events. On Monday, we celebrated Henry’s achievements at his recent Ninja obstacle course competitions. Most recently, Henry competed in the FINA international qualifier and placed 1st in both Speed & Endurance courses. Henry has been working towards qualifications for the World Obstacle Expo in Dallas, Texas in July where he will compete in 5 events over 3 days. We are super proud of his achievements so far, and excited to see how he goes at World Championships!
We have also had our Lego Robotics Team attend an immersion day with two other schools. This team practise at lunchtimes in a Robotics Club with Mrs Wilkinson, our Technology Specialist. We know these students will learn amazing new techniques today at their immersion day.

Dear Families and Friends
Every week we have a focus on a value or important life skill that as a whole school we explicitly teach and reinforce with our students. At the start of this term, we learnt about how important it is to be Respectful to all staff and other students. We practiced what that looked like, sounded like and acknowledged our students who have been making a real effort to have respectful interactions with others. We then focused on Following Instructions and how important it is for safety especially, that students know how to follow all staff instructions.
At Assembly on Monday, we introduced that our new focus will be Honesty for the next few weeks and teachers then will follow up with explicitly teaching why this is so important and what it looks like in different settings. All staff will then reward and acknowledge students practicing being honest and truthful in classrooms and playgrounds and a range of different situations. More importantly our students will learn a range of strategies to help themselves with being truthful and hopefully feel proud of themselves for making the right choices.
This is just a snapshot of some ways we discuss being honest with our learners and how it makes them feel when they tell the truth about situations.
Once you are honest……
- If you have done the wrong thing and been honest and tried to fix it – Go you
- If you have been part of a problem or seen a problem and been honest – Go you again
- If something has happened to you and you have been honest about the situation – Go you a third time
Remember we can fix any problem if we are honest with ourselves and others!!
CYBER SAFETY TIPS FOR AT HOME
If you are looking for some ways of talking to your children at home about cyber safety and being safe online, especially in chat/messaging groups, the below website is an excellent resource for Parents.
If you would like to learn more about how you can help your children to be E-Safe at home this website is an excellent resource to start with.
The E-SAFETY KIDS Website- Be an E-Safe Kid- How to Be Kind online
The site has lots of strategies and what to do if:
*someone is being mean to your child online
*your child mentions that friends are being mean to others online
*How do I know if I’m being mean to others online.
Here’s a snapshot below:
Cyberbullying is using technology to bully or hurt someone else.
Lets talk about learning
A reminder to ask your children these 5 questions about their learning
- What are you learning?
- How are you going?
- How do you know?
- How can you improve?
- Where do you go for help?
These are also great questions to help prompt conversations about learning at school!
Thank you to our Life Ed. Educator Brigitte, who did an amazing job teaching our learners about making friends, feelings, respecting and connecting and how to be Cyberwise.
Thought for the week!
Thank you from Mrs Ryan

Developing oral language and reading with your children
To support the reading messages that I have written about in our newsletters this year, are links to two short videos.
One video discusses the importance of oral language development in young children and how we can support and enhance this.
The other video is some practical ways you can share reading with your child.
Please take the time to view these, particularly if you are a parent of a child year 2 and under.

Readers Cup
Since the last week of term one, ten students from across Year 5 and Year 6 have been preparing for the upcoming Readers Cup competition. This competition requires students to read five novels (generally more than once) so that they know as much about the books as possible. On the day of the competition the teams participate in five rounds of questioning where they answer collaboratively to earn points. There are still a few weeks of reading ahead before the day of the competition. We would like to wish these students the best as they continue to prepare for their competition on the 17th of June.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The 2025 Premiers Reading Challenge reading period began on the 6th of May. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 2 need to read or experience 20 books, students in Year 3 and Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books (this number of books acknowledges that older students are more likely to select longer and more complex books).
This year we are running an inter-house reading competition. Each book read will contribute to the total number of books read for each sporting house. Each week the sports captains will visit classrooms to count the books read and will announce the weekly totals at assembly each week. The winning house will be presented with a trophy at assembly the week after book week in August.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Students joined us on Wednesday at midday to be a part of the 25th annual National Simultaneous Storytime event. Students were welcomed when visiting the display at the Library during first break throughout his week as part of our celebration activities.
May is National Family Reading Month
This year is the 29th year of National Family Reading Month which celebrates and encourages families reading together. Why not take the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge? To participate in the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge simply read for a minimum of 10 minutes each day and mark the day’s reading on the record chart. The reading record chart is available from the Library and is also included below. Students who return their completed reading chart will receive a certificate of participation and will go into the draw to win one of 10 prizes.
Have a great week!
