Junior Sports Carnival Success
Wow! What an amazing Junior Sports Day for our Prep-Year 2 students on Friday. Our juniors ran, jumped, threw and cheered their way through the day. What a wonderful way to become familiar with our athletics categories and also to learn to work as a team in ball games and relay events.
Thank you to all of our parents and community who came to cheer our little ones on. I know that you will agree that Mr D and George did an amazing job at organising the events and set up. Thank you to all of our junior staff for their enthusiasm. Super effort also from our Tucker Box workers delivering all of the delights up to our school oval. Can’t wait to do it all again next year!

District Sports for our Senior Students
Today our talented Athletics Team competed at the District Sports event. The events continue over two days, we wish these students all the best GO DAYBORO!

150 Years celebration coming up!
It’s THIS WEEK! This Friday, our current DSS students will be celebrating our 150 years of schooling by participating in some fabulous events. We will commence the day in classrooms where we will sing our school song together and outline the activities for the day. Thank you to Mrs Cook, Ms Cook and Mrs Wilkinson for all of their organisation around the activities on the day. Senior students will participate in the rotational activities from 9:30-11am and the Prep-Year 2 students from 11:50-1:20pm. Each year level is also scheduled in for a session with Kylie Harries our 150 years Mural artist. In this session, our students will contribute their ideas about Dayboro State School and our sports houses. Thanks to our P&C, the children and staff will be awarded with a commemorative badge to mark the occasion next week.
Students are welcome to dress up in historical clothing if they wish or wear a current or historical uniform, however, this IS NOT A FREE DRESS DAY. We anticipate that most students will be wearing their school uniform. Please let your child’s class teacher know if you would like to help out on the day.
Our community celebration is on Saturday afternoon and we would love to see you here. Our School Captains and Indigenous Ambassadors will facilitate our Opening Ceremony. The afternoon will include roll calls, History Display, Devonshire Teas and Choir/Band performance. Of course, in the evening, we will have our Bush Dance with Food Trucks and Bar in the CSA. What a celebration?!
Thank you to our hardworking committee which is made up of community reps, staff reps and P&C reps, for all of their careful preparation of our historical displays, our student celebration activities and of course our community day and the Bush Dance!
We are looking forward to a fun couple of days!!!
Sharing practice with other schools – BPSHS Visit!
This week we hosted some of the educators from Bray Park State High School to share our practise around using student feedback through Learning Walks and Talks, together with student learning, to plan for learning and developing our engaging teaching strategies. Such a proud moment for our staff to listen to how blown away the BPSHS staff were when listening to our students identify what they are learning, how they are going and their next steps for learning. Our teachers have promoted this student voice in the classrooms. The in-depth curriculum teacher conversations while discussing the student learning, helped our high school colleagues to see how impactful this gathering of learning information informs our teaching. Great job DSS staff!

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines.
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).Further information about the NCCD is outlined in the attached Parent Fact Sheet.
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please feel free to contact Gabrielle Douglas - Principal, or Alicia Taverlardis - Inclusion Teacher.

Parent Calendar
Have a great week!
Gabrielle
What a great two weeks of learning we have had! We have seen students identifying their learning goals and detailing what steps they can take to achieve these goals. We have seen students reflective of the feedback they have received from teachers and peers and apply this feedback to further learning situations.
Positive Behaviour for Learning - PBL
This week, our explicit teaching of positive behaviour is in ‘Play Times’. This is where we will explicitly teach in class how to Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be a Learner in all the play areas of our school environment. Please remind your children that one important way we would like them to be safe in play times, is by not hanging by their legs only on the lower playground monkey bars. These bars are very high, so swinging using arms and hands only please.
Dayboro Learner
Our Dayboro Learner Focus is ‘Quokka Quinn the Critical Thinker’ for this week and next week. There are many ways we can become critical thinkers and we will be looking for these qualities of our Dayboro Learners in class over the next two weeks:
RRE – Respectful Relationships Education
Respectful Relationships Education is a new part of the Australian Curriculum, delivered in schools through various areas including the subject Health, school based behaviour programs such as our PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning program) and the Education Department’s RESPECT program.
In August 2015 the Queensland Government responded to the final report from the Special Taskforce on Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland — Not Now Not Ever: Putting an end to domestic and family violence in Queensland. The report contains 140 recommendations, all of which have been adopted by the government.
The Respect program stems from recommendation 24, which supports the introduction of programs in state schools to embed through the school life of all secondary and primary state schools a culture that emphasises:
- developing and maintaining respectful relationships
- respecting self
- gender equality.
The Queensland Department of Education has developed the Respect program, designed for students from Prep to Year 12. It is a primary prevention program based on evidence-based research and best-practice educational approaches.
Prep to Year 2
Students develop the capacity to understand and self-regulate their emotions in ways that account for their feelings and the feelings of others. They also develop skills to initiate social interactions.
The program content explores the people who are important to these young students and develops their capacity to initiate and maintain respectful relationships in different contexts, including at school, at home and in the classroom. Students explore their own sense of self and the factors that contribute to and influence their identities. They learn about emotions and how to enhance their interactions with others as they grow older.
Years 3 to 6
The program's focus broadens to include the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support students' wellbeing and that of their family and friends. Personal and social skills take on an increasing importance as they look to family, peers and the community for role models. They develop communication skills, social skills and behaviours required for respectful relationships. They also begin to explore personal and social factors that support and contribute to their identities and emotional responses in varying situations. Students explore knowledge, understanding and skills that help them build and maintain respectful relationships. They also develop skills to manage their emotions and examine how the nature of their relationships may change over time.
The Dayboro Playgroup joined us for our junior sports carnival last Friday. There were many smiling faces as our littlest community members participated in the fun events of the day. Thank you for joining us. Before you know it you will be here in prep enjoying these events as students of D.S.S.
Dayboro State School Lunchtime Clubs
We are VERY LUCKY at DSS to have teachers who run exciting and engaging lunchtime clubs each term. We have ANOTHER brand-new club that started up this week – our ‘wellness Space Club’.

We also have options for those who are struggling with Financial Hardship, so if you need to discuss any payment options please don’t hesitate in speaking to one of the Business Managers at the School.
Statements
Families should now have received Debtor Statements via email. These are to show what invoices remain owing on student accounts. Only students who have an outstanding invoice or credit will have received the statement. It is important to understand that this is not another invoice being issued to families. If you are in credit (i.e. a negative amount), this can be used against any current or future invoices you may receive, including school camps.
Please check through your statements thoroughly and advise the School if there are any discrepancies (for example, you have been invoiced for Instrumental Music however your child did not participate). Please email all discrepancies through to bsm@dayboross.eq.edu.au.
If you have a credit on your account as well as an active invoice, please contact the School to advise us if you wish to use the credit against the invoice. We cannot apply credits automatically, so please let us know and we can do this for you. This also goes for sibling accounts, as we can apply the credits from one sibling to another siblings active invoice.
If parents/caregivers have questions or concerns regarding statements, please don’t hesitate to contact one of the Business Managers – we are always more than happy to help.

Dayboro State School 150th Anniversary Preparations
Our school history display is taking shape in the school library. Students will all have an opportunity to visit the display with their class over the coming days and each class will have some time allocated to view the display on our school celebration day on Friday July 26th. Students will be given a memento booklet with trivia questions which can be answered by looking for specific items included in the history display.
Remember to come and visit our display on the 27th of July during our community celebration event. We can’t wait to hear your stories and recollections!

Book Week
Our annual Book Week celebrations are scheduled for 19th – 23rd of August.
Our school Character Costume Parade will be held on Wednesday the 21st of August from 9:15 a.m. on the oval.
This year we are changing our Character Costume Parade slightly. This year we would like to acknowledge more of the students who make the effort to come along in a book themed costume. The goal of our costume parade is to build excitement in children’s literature and to encourage maximum participation in Book Week. This year, each student who participates in our costume parade will have their name put into a lucky draw to win a book prize. There will be one book prize per class. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes that have been awarded in previous years will not be part of our celebrations this year. However, we will still have certificates acknowledging costumes that align with our fun categories as well as other competitions in the lead up to Book Week. Remember, this year’s theme is “Reading is Magic”.
Students are welcome to come and work in the maker space on Fridays at first break to create costume elements in preparation for the costume parade in August.
Meerkat Productions is returning this year to perform a live-action retelling of two of the books that have been nominated to win prizes during Book Week. This year’s books are “Timeless” for lower school students and “Being Jimmy Baxter” for upper school students. We hope everyone is able to join us for these events. The cost to attend these sessions is $9.00 per student. Invoices for payment will be made available soon.
During Book Week each year the Children’s Book Council of Australia award prizes to Australian authors in 6 different categories. This year’s shortlisted books the Younger Readers section and the Eve Pownall Award are shown below.
Our pick from the Younger Readers category is “Scout and the Rescue Dogs” by Dianne Wolfer. This fun adventure follows Scout and her dad as they race to deliver donations to animal shelters across Victoria and New South Wales at the start of an intense bush fire season. We loved Scout’s positive “can do” attitude which was demonstrated throughout her story.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2024 is still running. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books. Reading record sheets are available from class teachers and from the Library.
Have a great week!
