Cross School Moderation Success
In the last week of term 1, our school hosted 81 teachers from across 3 schools – Mt Samson SS, Petrie SS and Dayboro SS for our Cross School Moderation. This was a fabulous way to continue nurturing our partnerships within our cluster.
A whole school approach to moderation processes underpins systematic curriculum delivery and supports teachers to align curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting; and ensures consistency of teacher judgments and accuracy of reporting against the Australian Curriculum achievement standards. At this professional learning afternoon, our classroom teachers moderated a Maths task from term 1 and our specialist teachers moderated a sample from their learning area. This cross moderation allows the teachers to professionally discuss the Australian Curriculum achievement standards and reinforces a consistency of teacher judgement.
Our cluster teachers were also able to collaboratively look at the new Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum and identify the changes to the Maths curriculum delivery. We will be implementing the English and Maths Version 9 in 2024.
ANZAC Day commemoration Service and March
Next week, we will commemorate ANZAC Day at Dayboro State School with a formal service on Wednesday 24 April at 9:30am. We will welcome special guests Richard Hawkins, Kenneth Brown and Simon McKechnie from the Dayboro War Memorial Society. All parents and carers are of course welcome to attend. The students will present a class wreath during the ceremony. If you would like to lay a wreath, you will be able to join in this part of the ceremony.
On ANZAC Day, Monday 25 April, we will of course also participate in the community march and service. Please consider supporting our march. All students are welcome and should meet myself, Mrs Ryan and other staff members, in full school formal uniform, at the Dayboro Pub at 9:15am for a 9:30am start. Please ensure that your child has a hat for the march. Parents and friends are welcome to march with us on the day. We encourage the adults to walk at the back of our section. Once we reach the school, we will keep the children in our bus zone until you collect them.
The community ceremony commences at 10am. Our School Captains, our Choir and our Band will be a part of this ceremony. We would love to see lots of our DSS students supporting this service. A reminder also that the community does have a dawn service as an alternative to the 10am service.

This week, from Thursday, our student councillors will be selling ANZAC Day poppies in the CSA each morning. Poppies will be $2.00.
Senior Cross Country
It was wonderful to see our Year 3-6 students participate and enjoy the Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday. We loved having the community come along to cheer our little athletes on!! While place getters were awarded with some ribbons, we admired and cheered on all students who have had a go at this event. Of course, this event could not happen without the careful planning and preparation from Mrs Marks, George’s help preparing the track and the cross-country training legends Mrs Blair, Mrs Marks and Mr Baade!
Thank you also to our hard-working P&C for supplying the well-received fruit ice blocks as a congratulations to our students. They enjoyed these at second break.
We look forward to our Prep-Year 2 students participating in the Junior Cross Country Carnival later this term.

Light it up Blue for Autism
We continue to use our Student Council to listen to our student voice. Last term, our students opted to promote Light it up Blue for Autism on Friday 19 April, to continue awareness of thinking differently and an awareness of Autism with our students. Our Culture and Inclusion working party have provided resources for class teachers to use to help our students to celebrate and discuss neurodiversity. It is a great opportunity to raise awareness and understanding and thereby promoting INCLUSION.
Students are not asked to dress in blue for this event.
School Calendar
We aim to keep you fully informed of our events, excursions and school processes. Please find attached our Term 2 Parent Calendar. We can’t wait to see you involved with these events this term.
Checking in on our Student Wellbeing
We are committed to assisting our students to be engaged and looking after their wellbeing. Last year, we used the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey to understand from our Year 4-6 cohorts what might be their strengths in this area and also the components of wellbeing that we could focus on at our school.
Once again, we have the opportunity to participate in the survey. I attach the Information for Parents and Carers to consider. We will complete the surveys over the next couple of weeks. Please have a read and if you have any questions, please contract your child’s class teacher. Similarly, if you would like your child to opt out, please contact their class teacher by Friday.
Student and Staff Success!
Late last term, we were excited to hear that Year 3 student Henry had competed at the State Championships for Little Athletics where he won 7th place in the 800m race. Great job Henry!
It was also wonderful to hear about one of our Teachers, Leanne Anderson and one of our students Matilda’s success over the holidays!
Leanne won the Derby champion at Dayboro Working Horse Competition and Matilda won the junior Dayboro Working Horse Stockland challenge. We are super proud of our amazing horse women!

Have a great week!
Gabrielle
Welcome back to Term 2.
We hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable break. The children all seemed very excited to be back and had lots of great stories to tell about their holidays and Easter adventures.
Our teachers have been working hard to prepare rich and engaging learning environments for their students. This has set the scene for a great Term 2. Term 2 is always such a rewarding term as the students are settled into their classrooms, routines are well established, and students and staff are clear about our curriculum and pedagogical choices matched to the learning needs of our students. This term a reminder that parents will receive report cards for their children. These will be uploaded to Q Parents on the last day of the term. SO it is important if you don’t have QParents to get on board quickly. All our excursions are also managed through QParents.
A reminder that the teachers will be emailing you all with a Welcome Back email and attached will be the Term 2 Curriculum Overview. This overview will summarise the learning that will be taking place in each curriculum area for the term.
Some important reminders about ANZAC Day events.
*Wednesday 24th April - our school Anzac Day service starts at 9:30am. All parents are welcome to attend.
*Thursday 25th April Anzac Day. We will be walking as a school to the Community service. We would invite all students to march with our school. We are meeting at 9:15am at the Dayboro Pub and will walk to the showgrounds together. The Community service starts at 10am. Our Band and Choir, as well as our School Leaders are all participating in the service. We look forward to seeing as many of our students as possible walking with us and attending the service. Formal uniform and school hats will need to be worn please.
Our Easter Hat parade went ahead on the last Thursday of Term 1. While it was disappointing that we didn’t get to walk through the town and perform at the park, we still had a lot of fun walking through the CSA and performing at the hall. Thank you to the huge numbers of parents and other family who turned out to cheer their children on. It made such a huge difference.

SCHOOL BUS NOTE
A message from the bus companies- unfortunately we still have parents dropping off and picking up in our bus turnaround. This area is strictly only for buses before and after school. We want to keep ALL our students safe – the students who catch buses as well as the students getting collected by parents, grandparents etc. So keeping this bus lane free, will ensure all students can enter and exit safely.
A message from council:
Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) Local Laws Unit undertakes a School Parking Patrol Program where officers complete scheduled school patrols, both in the morning and afternoon, to ensure that vehicles are parked in a safe and lawful manner. The primary aim of the program is to ensure that students and family members/caregivers are able to safely move around the school area as part of dropping off or picking up students from the school.
The Moreton Bay Regional Council Local Law No.5 (Parking) 2011 and Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1999 control parking or stopping of vehicles on footpaths, bicycle paths, marked yellow lines, shared paths, dividing strips and nature strips, along with vehicles parking across residents driveways and within ‘No Stopping’, ‘No Parking’, and ‘Bus Zones’ and Pick-up / Drop -off zones. Council is legally required to enforce these areas and the School Parking Patrol Program forms part of this process. Drivers are reminded that footpaths and nature strips are in place to promote pedestrian movement in a safe manner along roadsides and that drivers and residents must not stop on a bicycle path, shared path, dividing strip or nature strip. Please also note that vehicles that are parked with two wheels up and two wheels down is not considered as a lawful parking practice.
Local Laws officers conduct enforcement through the issuance of Penalty Infringement Notices as part of each School Parking Patrol. Please be aware that Council officers may take photographic evidence of vehicles stopping or parking illegally with Penalty Infringement Notices to be issued via mail at a later date to the offending vehicle’s owner.
Visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/parking for further guidance on parking restrictions.
For any further information, members of the School community are welcome to contact Moreton Bay Regional Council on 3205 0555.

Library
Welcome back for Term 2! Term 2 is always a very busy time for the Library with many activities and initiatives that encourage students to participate in regular reading. We look forward to as many students as possible participating in these reading activities.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The 2024 Premiers Reading Challenge reading period begins on the 7th of May. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 2 need to read or experience 20 books, students in Year 3 and Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books (this number of books acknowledges that older students are more likely to select longer and more complex books).
Students will be given more information about participation in the Premier’s Reading Challenge during their Library time.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Students in all year levels are welcome to join in with the 24th annual National Simultaneous Storytime event on the 22nd of May during first break at the Library. Students welcome to visit the display at the Library during first break throughout this celebration week in May and are invited to join in with our celebration activities.
May is National Family Reading Month
This year is the 28th year of National Family Reading Month which celebrates and encourages families reading together. Why not take the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge? To participate in the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge simply read for a minimum of 10 minutes each day and mark the day’s reading on the record chart. The reading record chart is available from the Library and is also included below. Students who return their completed reading chart will receive a certificate of participation.
Have a great week!
