School Chaplaincy – What is it?
Mentoring & Role Modelling
Part of the school chaplain’s job is to act as a role model for students. Chaplains assist them in the development of supportive relationships for, with and among students. According to the 2021 chaplaincy snapshot, this makes up around 14% of what a chaplain spends their time doing. This can be achieved by spending time with students in groups or one on one (with consent), often working through a program designed to help the students in this way. For example, the ‘Girls with Big Dreams’ program which was successfully run here at Dayboro State School in the past. School chaplains are available to everyone, but they are particularly invested in supporting individuals and groups who may be considered at-risk. Through early intervention programs and support, school chaplains increase the chances of these young people experiencing better life outcomes.
