Numeracy at Dayboro State School

HOC.jpg

Since 2017 Dayboro State School has implemented fundamental changes to the way we teach Numeracy.

Numeracy is the application of mathematical knowledge and understanding in problem-solving situations. Mathematics education in the 21st century goes beyond routine (mastery & automaticity) and includes innovative problems that are complex, unfamiliar and non-routine. Mathematics lessons at Dayboro all feature the following key elements, to ensure consistency of teaching practice from Prep to Year 6:

  • Consolidation of existing and developing concepts;
  • Explicit learning of new concepts;
  • Investigation of mathematical questions and patterns (Thinking and Reasoning);
  • Communication with others using the language of Mathematics; and
  • Reflection on their own learning and thinking.

Ask your child about using the ‘Fishbowl’ strategy to explore and respond to other students’ ideas or to explain the ‘I think….because…..’ approach to reasoning and problem solving. For more information about how you can assist with the development of your child’s numeracy skills, please check out the following links:
