Library and Maker Space

Welcome Back

Welcome back!  Hopefully everyone had an opportunity to squeeze in some reading during their break.

The Library is a busy time during Term 3 as we get ready to celebrate Australian children’s literature during Book Week which is held during the last week of August.  Students from across the school will have the opportunity to create items to decorate the Library as part of our “Reading is Magic” displays in the lead up to Book Week.

Book Week

Our annual Book Week celebrations are scheduled for 19th – 23rd of August.

We have planned some exciting activities to help us celebrate Book Week.  Our Character Costume Parade will be held on Wednesday the 21st of August from 9:15 a.m. on the oval.

This year we are changing our Character Costume Parade slightly.  This year we would like to acknowledge more of the students who make the effort to come along in a book themed costume.  The goal of our costume parade is to build excitement in children’s literature and to encourage maximum participation in Book Week.  This year, each student who participates in our costume parade will have their name put into a lucky draw to win a book prize.  There will be one book prize per class.  The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes that have been awarded in previous years will not be part of our celebrations this year.  However, we will still have certificates acknowledging costumes that align with our fun categories as well as other competitions in the lead up to Book Week.  Remember, this year’s theme is “Reading is Magic”.

We cannot wait to see all of the awesome costumes!  Students are welcome to come and work in the maker space on Fridays at first break to create costume elements in preparation for the costume parade in August.

We also have Meerkat Productions returning to perform a live-action retelling of two of the books that have been nominated to win prizes during Book Week.  This year’s books are “Timeless” for lower school students and “Being Jimmy Baxter” for upper school students.  We hope everyone is able to join us for these events.  Invoices for payment for students to attend these shows will be sent to families in the coming week.

During Book Week each year the Children’s Book Council of Australia award prizes to Australian authors in 6 different categories.  This year’s shortlisted books for the Early Childhood Book of the Year and Picture Book of the Year categories are shown below.

Our pick from the Early Childhood category is “Grace and Mr. Milligan”.  This story beautifully captures how the power of friendship can help with loss and grief.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2023 is still running.    To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books.  Reading record sheets are available from class teachers and from the Library.

Have a great week!
